Night Light Driving

Driving at Night With Bright Lights is Also Dangerous

The American Medical Association adopted a policy a few years ago stating that excessive night-time light exposure—including that from computer screens and other electronic devices—can disrupt sleep, and that children and adolescents should be particularly protected from such exposure.

Experts argue that exposure to the wrong kind of light at night can lead to unsafe driving conditions, and too much night-time light may also increase the risk of cancer. The AMA expressed concern about the impact of unshielded night-time lights on driving conditions.

In darkness our pupils dilate to allow more light in, but when we look at unshielded light (light without a cover), our pupils constrict, impairing our vision. Dr Mario Motta, a cardiologist and member of the AMA Council on Science and Public Health, said it is like driving with your eyelids half-closed.
