What is Attention Deficit Disorder?

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a psychiatric illness or disorder wherein the neurological development of the child is not at par with his or her age. The child faces situations like lack of attention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. The symptoms of attention deficit disorder appear between an age brackets of six years to twelve years.

Since the age of six to twelve years is the crucial period in a child’s life, it is very essential for parents to take utmost care and attention. The major growth and development in a child happens in this period of time. Hence the possibilities of going through such a situation can also lead to attention deficit disorder. In schools, children often pay less attention to their academics and other related activities. As a result, they achieve a poor performance result at  school level.

Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder

Before coming to the conclusion of the child suffering from attention deficit disorder, it becomes very essential to check every symptom that matches with it. The common symptoms of ADD are impulsivity, disruptive behavior, inattention and hyperactivity. Sometimes it is very difficult to detect the exact symptom as there is a very thin line of difference between every symptom.

A child suffering from the problem of inattention often shows the following signs:

  1. Distraction, missing upon details, lack of focus.
  2. Becoming bored in every little while.
  3. Lack of listening.
  4. Daydreaming

In case of hyperactivity, the child would show up the following signs:

  1. Speaking nonstop.
  2. Restlessness.
  3. Constantly roaming around.
  4. Lack of self discipline.

In case of impulsivity, the child would display the following signs:

  1. Impatience at the highest level.
  2. Behaving improperly
  3. Speaking out bluntly without even thinking anything.
  4. Frequent interruption in others’ work.

Causes of Attention Deficit Disorder

Before going in for a remedy, it is very essential to understand the cause of attention deficit disorder. There are three main causes of attention deficit disorder namely, genetics, environment and society.

Genetics

As per some studies, it has been proved that attention deficit disorder is often caused genetically. It is transmitted via genes to children from those parents who have undergone attention deficit disorder. Children often repeat the same behavior as it is being undertaken by parents.

Environment

Environmental factors also contribute in developing attention deficit disorder. It can lead a person towards ADD is any state. Alcohol or smoking consumed during pregnancy time can harm in neurological development of child inside the womb of the mother. This would further lead to inappropriate development of organs, premature birth, low birth weight, etc.

Society

Society too can be a cause of attention deficit disorder. Sometimes children get affected with their family’s poor financial condition or family’s expectation for higher result, etc. As a result of this their neurological development starts affecting up badly. Hence, it causes attention deficit disorder in kids.
