Bad Effect Of Mounting Weight On Knees

Introduction: Being overweight increases the risk of developing osteoarthritis in a person. This is such a disease that constantly weakens the joints due to which even walking becomes difficult and severe pain emerges. As the age increases, symptoms of weakening of all the joints of the patient including the knees begin to appear. If the weight of the person becomes too much, this weakness of the joints can increase manifold. A lot of people gain weight due to unorganized lifestyle. It leads to joint problems and thus, knee pain start developing in the youth as well.

Osteoporosis:

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease of the joints characterized primarily by loss of cartilage leading to weakening of the joints. It may also lead to stiffness or pain. When the cartilage near the bone wears away, the bone of the joint becomes extremely brittle. Therefore, there may be an urgent need for a knee replacement. At the same time, a person who is overweight increases the chances of getting osteoarthritis. Although the exact reason for this association is not clear. It is understood that being overweight puts more strain on their knee joints and therefore has a higher rate of weakening of their joints.

The Mobile Point:

The knee joint is also called the mobile joint which connects the leg to the thigh and helps a person to walk, run, bend legs and sit. The bone of the knee joint is strengthened by cartilage and ligaments. This keeps the bone safe and prevents friction injury caused by the bones rubbing against each other.

Importance of Cartilage& Ligaments:

Preventing damage to the cartilage and ligaments is important for maintaining the knee in good condition. When the knee has to bear excessive weight, there is more friction and damage to the cartilage. If the body weight increases even by one kilo, then its burden on the knee increases manifold. The research carried out on reducing one kg of body weight found that the load or pressure on the knee joint decreased by 4 kg.

Main Reasons for Knee Pain:

There can be many reasons for knee pain i.e. osteoporosis, in which excessive thinning and weakening of bones, injury, wear and tear of bones with increasing age and osteoarthritis are the main ones. Although most of the cases of joint pain are related to the disorder of aging, but nowadays increasing cases of osteoarthritis in youth are an indication that our young generation has neglected some important activities of life, such as exercise, sports and proper eating etc.

Sedentary Life Style:

In fact, working youth have started adopting a sedentary lifestyle. They sit for hours at their workplace in the same posture, mostly in the wrong posture, and do not understand the importance of keeping the joints of the body moving. Now walking or cycling is not their trend and they spend a lot of time watching television after returning home from work. As a result, the problem of obesity is spreading like an epidemic in the urban part of the country. The problem of obesity, which is the cause of many lifestyle diseases like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, also makes many people prone to joint problems or osteoarthritis at an early age.

Excessive Weight on Knees:

In fact, excessive body weight puts extra pressure on the knees which is not justified for the knees. It is just like imposing a weight of 20 kg on someone who has the capacity to lift 10 kg. For some time a person can carry this extra weight and can continue with his activities but after some time he can become a victim of any injury or sprain or even fall.

Joint Replacement:

When we put more weight on our body than its capacity, then this atrocity becomes evident in other forms. First of all, it is clear from the pain in the knees that you are not treating your knees properly. If the knee starts to weaken beyond a certain point, joint replacement is the only option available for such people.
