theory of multiple intelligences - Sachi Shiksha

Howard Gardner introduced the theory of Multiple Intelligence to the world in his book “Frames of Mind” in the year 1983 in which he expanded the denotation of intelligence and explained various types of intellects. According to this theory individuals do not take birth with all mental capacity they will ever have. His theory gave challenge to the old belief that there exists only one kind of intelligence that is termed as general intellect which lays stress on only cognitive abilities.

With the purpose of expanding this belief, he proposed eight various kinds of intellects. According to him, everyone has these types of intellects but profile varies on the basis of conditioning and genes.

Linguistic Intelligence

First kind of intelligence is termed as the linguistic intelligence. A person who possesses such type of intellect is known as word smart. Such individual has potential to deal with spoken and written language, capability of learning various languages and to attain particular aims by using those skills. These people have capability to evaluate details and make speeches, write books, novels and scripts using languages.

A word smart person can become an efficient lawyer, host, author, speaker, journalist or a curator in future. For instance we can name Oprah Winfrey or William Shakespeare.

Second kind of intelligence is termed as logical intelligence. A person who possesses such type of intellect is known as number smart. Such individual has the ability to solve problems with logical reasoning and scientific investigation. Also, he or she is good at solving mathematical problems. These people are smart at solving equations, calculations and abstract problems. Such individual has the potential to deal with various patterns of wide or confined areas. These people have capability to recognize large and small scale images. A picture smart person can become an efficient pilot, surgeon, architect or graphic designer. For instance we can name Frank Lloyd Wright and Amelia Earhart.

Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence

Fourth kind of intelligence is termed as bodily-kinesthetic intelligence.

A person who possesses such type of intellect is known as body smart. Such individual has potential to make use of his or her body to resolve the issues or model the products. These people can perform various stunts, skills, solve problems with help of their body. A body smart person can become an efficient dancer, surgeon, athlete, mechanic, physical therapist etc. For instance we can enumerate the names of Simone Bills and Micheal Jordan.

These people can influence others by understanding their moods and desires. A people smart person can become an efficient teacher, psychologist, sales person or a manager. For instance we can give names of Mother Teresa or Mahatma Gandhi.

Intrapersonal Intelligence

Seventh kind of intelligence is termed as intrapersonal intelligence. A person who possesses such type of intellect is known as self-smart.  Such individual has deep knowledge of himself or herself which includes his or her abilities, goals, desires, insecurities, fears etc. These people can use such information for healthy regulation of their lives. This highly assists them to understand themselves completely and achieve meaningful purpose of their lives.

It is a fact that every individual or student has a particular set of abilities and potentials. In today’s education system, schools only lay stress on mathematical reasoning and linguistic skills of the students. But it is true that many students have other set of skills. It is very crucial to make them realize the importance of various kinds of intellects and focus on their strengths rather than weaknesses because by working on one’s strength, a person can become best in his kind of intellect and achieve a lot of name and fame rather than working in a field which is not suitable for him.
