Loneliness can be really disturbing.

It can even affect your peace of mind and lead you to negative thoughts which is not good for you.

Psychiatrists warn that loneliness can disturb your mind so much that you may be forced to take some medicines to get over the mental trauma.

It is true that loneliness can play strange games with the mind. It can cause mental disturbance, loss of temporary or permanent memory.

Loneliness can cause dementia or Alzheimer’s disease:

Recent researches have shown that loneliness can even cause Alzheimer’s disease similar to dementia which is a total memory loss. Report by Dutch researchers found a significant link between feelings of loneliness, of having no friends and the chances of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The research showed that loneliness is a unique health risk factor. Chances of getting this disease becomes double due to loneliness. Surprisingly you can feel lonely even if you are surrounded by friends and relatives.

This is so because despite your bodily presence your heart and mind feel lonely. The Dutch study showed that there is a 64 per cent greater risk of dementia for those aged people who feel lonely. Authors of the study headed by Dr Tjalling Jan Holwerda from Amsterdam swas quoted as saying, “Feelings of loneliness independently contribute to the risk of dementia in later life. Interestingly, the fact that `feeling lonely’ rather than`being alone’ was associated with dementia.

Beat loneliness by mediation:

However, you can beat loneliness by mediation. How is this so? When you mediate between two people who are fighting you have to talk to them. The talking by you will either have to be done together or separately with the two. When you mediate you will have the company of the other person. When you have company you will not be alone.

And if you are not alone you will not be lonely. Thus by mediating between two people you will not just be helping them, but also yourself. You will be beating your loneliness through the process of mediation.

Like noted above, it is the loneliness which is a main reason for the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Everyone needs company of someone. A recent study showed that the problem of mental stress had been growing significantly in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Why is this so? This is so because Chandigarh is considered a city of retired `babus’ who stay alone.

In search of greener pastures, their sons and daughters migrate abroad for a decent living. The children do send money from abroad to the aged parents living alone in the city. But money cannot buy happiness. Money also cannot buy you company.

Thus loneliness sets in the houses of these aged people living alone. However if these people are able to mediate between two disputing parties, their loneliness will reduce and they will be able to lead a healthier life.

Healthy activity:

Mediation like meditation is a very healthy activity. Meditation can give you new energy. It can refresh your body, mind and soul. Similarly mediation is a very noble exercise and it can give you inner peace. You may become a loner if you always keep quiet. But mediation gives you a chance to speak to others and the entire exercise works like a tonic to the mind. In the same way the meditation can lead to peace and harmony.

Valuable exercise:

Mediation is a valuable exercise especially when the dispute involves people who should have been on good terms otherwise. Fighting cases in courts will be lengthy, costly and tiresome. Talks can sort out the matter without much hassle.. Another advantage of mediation is that agreements reached with talks will be lasting and more acceptable to people than judgments imposed by the judge. You will also get rid of your loneliness if you mediate.
