Plum is a Mouth Watering Fruit. It is round in shape and red in colour, this fruit is a little hard, but is very tasty. The nutritive content of plum is also very high,for example one plum contains the nutritional value equal to one bowl of salad. It is a fruit with seed. These are red, black, yellow and sometimes green in colour.
The taste of the fruit is sweet and sour. The peel is mostly sour. The fruit also happens to be very juicy. It is consumed directly and even in form of jam (`murabba’). Plum contains anti-oxidants which give us relief from several diseases.

It is also known as ‘Alucha’ and in English it is known as ‘Plum’. This fruit is equal to lichi (lychee) in size or a little bigger and its cover is little soft and mostly of dark violet colour.
The content is yellowish and is of sweet and sour taste. Not much of plum cultivation takes place in India. But it is a very important fruit in America where it is grown in abundance.
As many as 2000 varieties of plum are found in the world. In summers and spring the Japanese varieties of plum can be red, violet and with orange or yellow content inside.
Plum is grown in the hilly regions of India. For its successful production, cold climate is suitable and mandatory. It has a good growth in the North Indian Hilly climate. Matiyar and alluvial soil are suitable for it. But for this, the drainage system should also be very good. Its cultivation is similar to that of peaches.
Plum is used as a dry fruit as well as a fruit. Plum is good for health. Therefore the fruit is very beneficial in diseases. Fig is consumed as dry fruit. Grapes are allowed to be dried over the shrubs to make raisins and then is used like a dry fruit. Khubani is also used as dry fruit, similarly the plum is used as a dry fruit.
Chemical Qualities of Plum
According to the nutritionists, 100 grams of plum has 2.3 percent energy, 8 percent carbohydrate, protein 1 percent, fibre 3.5 percent, vitamin A 12 percent, vitamin C 16 percent, vitamin K 5 percent, vitamin E 2 percent, Potassium 3 percent, Copper 6 percent, Phosphorus 2 percent and Selenium 2 percent.

A study has revealed that plum can save bone damage. The study states that 10 plums per day can reduce the probability of bone breakage. With increase in age the chances of weakening of the bones in the body increase. Dry plum strengthens the bones and is more beneficial to dry fig, dry strawberry, dry apple and raisins. Apart from this, one study shows that its consumption also leads to consumption of more minerals which gives extra energy to the body. The study reveals that it also works as anti – cancer which stops the development of cancer and tumor. Plum has several anti-oxidants and several kinds of nutrition elements which stop the cancer cells to grow. Its consumption doesn’t allow the lung and mouth cancer.

- Its consumption reduces chances of heart disease. Apart from this the cholesterol level is also. kept under control.
- It has high fiber content and hence the stomach related problems are sorted and the stomach doesn’t feel heavy and the intestines get relaxed.
- Its consumption is also good for diabetic patients. It can be consumed before and after the food. It also controls the blood sugar level in the body.
- Those who wish to reduce the weight or are dieting can consume plum on a regular basis. It doesn’t let the fat grow and the weight on the body also remains under control.
- In plum are available antioxidants and that is why its consumption brings glow on the skin and also the memory power increases.
- Plum contains niacin, riboflavin and thymine etc. which are good to take out the poisonous elements from the body.
- There is Vitamin A and Beta Carotene present in the plum .
Vitamin A is good for the upkeep of health and eye. Hence its consumption is considered good for the eyes. Plum’s consumption protects eyes from the Ultra Violet Rays. Plum, therefore is a good fruit to eat on a regular basis. Care must be taken to consume fresh fruits though.
