Monsoons in India are truly a rhapsody of bliss, beauty and relief from the scorching summer sun and they are meant to be savoured.
The monsoon season starts from June and rain till October. India become more and more beautiful during the monsoon season whether a city, town or a rural villages. Heavy rainfall, umbrellas, clogged roads and puddles of muddy water – Are these the things that come to your mind when you think of monsoons in India? Well, then you need to change your opinion about the glorious rainy season of India.
In short, travel to India shouldn’t be avoided just because its the monsoon season. For sure, it can make travel more difficult at times, and greater consideration needs to be given to packing and staying healthy during the monsoon.

Udaipur, Rajasthan
This charming city is sprinkled with historic structures all around exuding regal grandeur. Experiencing Udaipur is all about reliving royalty and appreciating the city’s man-made beauty. Home to the most sophisticatedly designed palaces, havelis, buzzing streets, and beautiful lakes. Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake (to the north of Lake Pichola and connected by a canal) are the most popular of Udaipur’s man-made lakes.
A boat ride on Lake Pichola gives a whole new perspective to the city, especially the City Palace Complex. The city of Udaipur, also called the ‘Venice of the East’ comes alive during the months of July-August but remains an unpopular destination among travellers throughout the monsoon season.
The city is well-equipped with a wide variety of hotels and lodging options that suit every pocket, restaurants that offer scrumptious Rajasthani dishes and bazaars that are popular for their handicrafts. Surrounded by Aravilli Hills, Monsoon Palace was built in the year 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Sing for the purpose to keep a track of the movement of monsoon clouds. Formerly known as Sajjan Garh Palace, it has been recently opened for public.
After the light showers of rain, the bird’s-eye views from the Monsoon Palace are remarkable – highlighting the lush greenery and enchanting lakes. Around eleven hours away from Delhi by road, Udaipur’s beauty only gets enhanced during the monsoons. Make sure you visit Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake, City Palace, Jag Mandir and Udaipur Ghat while you’re there.
Kutch, Gujarat
Located in the northwest side of Gujarat, Kutch is the largest district in India. The Rann of Kutch, is a remarkable place to visit. Much of it consists of the world’s largest salt desert, measuring around 10,000 square kilometers. What makes it even more amazing is that the salt desert is underwater during the main monsoon season in India.
For rest of the year, it’s an enormous stretch of white salt appearing to give the look of a white desert. Rann of Kutch has 18 cultural tribes which makes the place well-liked among travellers.
The never-ending desert plains with surreal horizon in the monsoon give an enticing view. Kutch is even more dreamlike during the monsoon as it gets submerged in the water. On the full moon nights, cultural programmes are organized at Dhordo to celebrate Gujarat’s rich culture and traditions.
One of the must-things-to-do in Rann of Kutch would be – a moon light camel safari. The Gujarat government has also set up tourist accommodations, the Toran Rann Resort, opposite the army checkpoint near the entrance to the salt desert.
This resort is closest to the salt desert, although the location is not particularly scenic. t’s best to head out into the desert only in the early morning or evening, otherwise the salt can be blinding. The full moon is the best time of month to see it, and cultural programs are usually held at Dhordo then. A moonlight Rann camel safari is magical.
Andaman Nicobar – Islands:
The Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands are a large group of nearly 570 islands located at southern part of the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean.
Andaman Islands are situated more than 1000km off the east coast in the middle of the Bay of Bengal, connected to the mainland by flights and ferries from Kolkata, Chennai and Vishakapatnam.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands is one of the best monsoon and Eco-friendly tourist’s destination in India. Its beautiful silver sandy virgin beaches, submarine mountains, breathtaking natural beauty and thrilling adventures water sports attracts tourists from all corners of India as well as world.
Thickly covered by deep green tropical forest, the archipelago supports a profusion of wildlife, including some extremely rare species of bird, but the principal attraction for tourists lies in the beaches and the pristine reefs that ring most of the islands.
Its culture and traditions are very much different from rest of India and holds a unique identity, there is no other place like this in rest of India.
Filled with colourful fish and kaleidoscopic corals, the crystal-clear waters of the Andaman Sea feature some of the world’s richest and least spoilt marine reserves
– perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. Although parts of the archipelago still see few visitors, the Andamans are now firmly on the tourist circuit.
