The Magic of the Monsoon

The Magic of the Monsoon

A Walk in the Rain

These rains provide great relief from the hectic pace of life. If you find some leisure time, wander in the rain. Step outside the narrow walls of your home and listen to the gentle splashing sound of the rain for a while. Watch the falling raindrops. Let every pore of your being absorb the rain. Whenever you can, however you can, take a walk in the rain and see how beautiful life appears.

Awaiting the Beloved Season

The rainy season is very dear to us. So dear that we wait for it like a cherished guest. Discussions begin even before it arrives. We hear its whispers in the news. How the rains will unfold is known only when they arrive, but reports begin to resonate well in advance. These reports serve as invitations to everyone. The entire country is preoccupied with their arrival. This whispering keeps the whole country busy.mumbai rains

Speculation about the rains’ moods swirls everywhere. If the rains are expected to be intense, preparations are made; if there are reports of lower intensity, preparations are still made. Everyone has their own thoughts and their own concerns. It seems as though these rains, too, bring endless speculation. The news alone is enough to create a stir. As Jagjit Singh says in one of his ghazals:

When the news of your arrival is heard,
The whole house is filled with your fragrance.

Nature’s Joyous Transformation

As soon as the rains arrive, the entire atmosphere is filled with a sweet fragrance. The whole atmosphere is refreshed by its rich, earthy fragrance. The withered vegetation blossoms, and the dull earth becomes green again. Birds begin to chirp as well. Dancing, jumping, singing, and flying in the open sky, they announce that the weather has become pleasant. Even the rustling winds begin to sing the tune of the rains. These rains imbue everything with their colours. Be it the earth or the sky, everything becomes radiant.

The Gift of Life

These rains are blessings. They are a gift to the entire universe. They are not merely about water falling from the sky. They are connected to the very fabric of life. This is why everyone waits for them. With them, everyone estimates their own gains and losses. It seems that everyone’s desires are connected to them. These desires are nourished by the rain and flourish. These showers also bring prosperity to the marketplace.

The Monsoon and the Economy

The showers add to the lustre of the marketplace. Merchants seem as though they have made a fortune. They too are overjoyed. It is as if a revolution has begun in business. From large corporate houses to street vendors, businesses witness a boom. The budget of every household in the country is influenced by these rains. And why not? Rain is considered the backbone of the economy. The entire responsibility of the economy seems to rest upon its shoulders. If the rains are good, the crops will be good; and if the harvest is good, the market will be bustling. This is why everyone’s eyes are fixed on the rains.

When the Rains Stay Away

Where the rains do not arrive, the situation becomes dire. People yearn for their sight. Where rainfall becomes scarce, earnest prayers are offered for their arrival. Elegant songs are composed for this purpose. Great efforts are made to invite the rains through traditional customs and rituals.

Yajnas are performed on a large scale. You must have seen this too: sweet rice is distributed, food distribution camps are set up everywhere, and prayers are offered. Desperate efforts are made to appease the gods and goddesses. In short, every possible means is used to bring rain. All kinds of traditional methods are adopted. Whenever the rains become indifferent, their indifference raises questions of livelihood.

It seems as though, if they do not rain this time, people will die of hunger. There is no certainty about them either. If they do not come, they simply do not come; and if they do, they sweep across the land. Who knows when they may make us repent? They, too, have their own tricks and moods. They are like free birds with no fixed abode.

The Timeless Charm of the Monsoon

These rains have their own stories, their own melodies, and their own music. They have a special connection with human life. Trees and plants are considered the adornment of our earth, and it is these rains that truly adorn and embellish that beauty. What can one say about these monsoon rains? Their arrival is like a wish come true. First, they are awaited, and then, when they pour, they are praised beyond measure. Whether men or women, children or the elderly, they have a magical effect on everyone.

A Moment for Yourself

In this fast-paced life, the rains provide great relief. If you get some free time, wander in the rain. Come out of the narrow walls of your home and spend some time with it. Listen to its gentle splashing music. Watch the falling raindrops. Let every pore of your being absorb the rain. Whenever you can, however you can, take a walk in the rain and see how beautiful life appears.

In your free time, break away from everything and watch the rain, even if only for a short while. Let your body and mind be drenched. Take out some time for yourself too. Live a few moments with the rains. The golden memories of these moments will keep you refreshed every day.

Monsoon Memories of Childhood

Ask your elders how much joy these rains brought to their lives. They will have a wealth of stories about these rains. They formed large groups and played in the pouring rain. Rain was like a festival for them. There were no restrictions or limitations, especially during those rainy days. They had mud houses in those days. There were unpaved streets, and as soon as it rained, everyone would pour into them.

The heavier the rain, the greater their joy. They would swim, play, jump, run, and indulge in countless playful antics. The rainy season was a time of frolic. Parents, too, were carefree. The children’s happiness was their own happiness. Watching them play so freely filled them with joy.

As soon as the rain began, they happily allowed the children to get drenched. When the children returned home after the rain had stopped, they were given a hot cup of milk. The entire rainy season passed like this. Those were the days—those carefree, fun-filled days of childhood.

A Nostalgic Farewell

Childhood is still here, and the rains are still here—but where is that joy? Where is that paper boat?
