The Role of Chance in Success
Introduction: Imagine that a student has prepared for an exam for months. The student has revised everything, scored good in every mock test, and finally feels ready. Then, on the actual exam day, the student falls seriously ill and has to be admitted to a hospital. Or perhaps the student is running late, in a hurry to reach the centre, misses the train and gets late. The student did everything possible and yet, somehow, things still went wrong. Sometimes, the student is simply told, “You were simply unlucky.”

Talent, Hard Work and Success
We often imagine success as a simple equation: put talent and hard work in one cauldron and the final product would be success. But life does not always follow such straightforward recipes and it can be unpredictable. Talent does matter, but sometimes the people who achieve success are not necessarily the most talented. Random events can significantly alter the final outcome.
The Role of Chance
Robert H. Frank, in his book Success and Luck, explains this through Al Pacino’s career-changing role in The Godfather. The studio preferred established actors, but director Francis Ford Coppola wanted to cast the relatively unknown Pacino. Coppola’s choice gave Pacino a major career break, showing how talent can matter, while opportunity can still depend on chance.
Everyday Events and Opportunities
This is what makes the ‘chance’ factor so strange. Sometimes it is one dramatic event; sometimes it is a series of trivial events that we barely notice. A specific person may introduce another person to someone. Someone may happen to be given the right project that completely aligns with his/her skillset and interest. Someone may get an opportunity at exactly the right moment. Various studies show how the trivial, everyday ‘chance’ events can accumulate and influence careers, relationships and progress. But recognising the role of luck does not mean sitting around and waiting for it.
Luck and Preparation
Luck still needs something to work with. It can be seen as the halfway point between opportunity and preparation that ultimately takes an individual to his/her objective or ‘success’. Hard work builds discipline and readiness; chance may decide when the opportunity appears. This is also why failure need not immediately become a reason to quit. A person may prepare perfectly and still not obtain his/her objective. A person may make the right choice and still face an unexpected setback. But resilience means learning from what happened, adapting, and trying again.
Meaning of Success
And what exactly counts as success, anyway? Why should everyone follow the same road? Success can mean more than money, fame, or applause. It can also mean personal growth, fulfilment, and living according to what matters to an individual. As one’s path or objective is different, perhaps his strength lies somewhere he has not yet tried. Sometimes, taking a reasonable risk and creating one’s own opportunities matters more than waiting for the perfect moment.
Conclusion
So, it is more about preparing for the best, but making room for the worst. A person should not stop chasing the dream simply because ‘chance’ has turned against him. And one should not look at someone else’s failure and casually say, “It was just bad luck.” His effort still deserves recognition. On a concluding note, a person may not always control his chances. But he can keep creating chances for himself. After all as Elvis Presley said, “When things go wrong, don’t go with them.”
