UNO: United Nations Organization

The United Nations (UN) is an organization that works to maintain peace and security among its member countries by promoting social progress and human rights. It also works to reduce poverty, disease, and hunger worldwide. The United Nations is also called the “mini parliament” of the world because discussions and voting on global issues, budget, and entry of new members take place here.

The United Nations was established on October 24, 1945, through the efforts of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt to promote international cooperation and prevent large-scale conflicts. It consists of 193 member states. The UN works through five main organs, including the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council.

The power to veto UN decisions lies with the five permanent members of the Security Council (US, Russia, China, Britain, France). When any new country applies to join the United Nations, only one permanent member state is required to veto the application.
