Road Accidents: A Matter of Concern -Carelessness Shouldn’t Cost a Life

When we come to know about a road accident that happened far away, it remains just a news for us, no matter how many lives are lost in it and such news comes and goes after two-four minutes. And when an accident happens somewhere nearby, it definitely disturbs us and fills us with despair. This is not news for us but like a lesson. The lava of our sympathy erupts. It is difficult to know how many people have to go through such painful road accidents every day. Do we ever think? And who will think? “One whose feet haven’t been wounded by thorns can’t truly understand another’s pain.” This is the reason why this subject is not taken seriously.

We may not be serious, but the statistics of road accidents presented by a recent report are very worrying. Delhi’s Center for Transport Research and Injury Prevention has made shocking revelations on deaths in road accidents. The report shows that one death is occurring every 3 minutes in road accidents, which is beyond our imagination, because we get to know about one or two accidents every day, while according to the report the situation is becoming very odd. Road accidents are swallowing one life every 3 minutes in the country, which is very regrettable. The report said that in the year 2023, 4.8 lakh accidents occurred in the country in which 1.72 lakh people lost their lives. According to the data, 35000 pedestrians and 10000 children are among those who lost their lives.

Road AccidentsMost of these deaths have occurred due to human error or negligence.  Negligence like not wearing helmet and not fastening seat belt is also causing loss of life, as 54000 of those who died were without helmet and 16000 were without seat belt. It is a sad situation that so many deaths have occurred in road accidents.

These figures are not just for reading and hearing. It is a matter of serious thinking. How many precious lives are going into the jaws of untimely death. Those who have died are gone and the trauma these accidents cause to their relatives is such that they cannot recover from it for the rest of their lives.

In this report, the major reason for these deaths is human error or negligence, overcoming which is no less than a challenge. A small negligence can cause a very big accident. It has become very important to curb the negligence that gives rise to accidents. Of course, campaigns are being run for this. Rules have been made. Very strict steps are also taken for following traffic rules. Strict actions are also taken, but still the danger of human error on life remains the same. These road accidents show that the road route is no longer a safe route. Till the time we reach our destination, it feels like life is at stake because no matter how safely we are going, who knows how carelessly someone is coming.

We must keep this thing in mind that a strong network of roads has been laid to make our journey easier and not to give rise to accidents due to carelessness. Rough driving, over speeding, over taking, wrong side driving, overloading etc. are such careless behaviors that lead to accidents and are extinguishing the light of families every three minutes.

There is also a report of the year 2023. The number of deaths is increasing year after year. In 2020, there were 1.38 lakh deaths; in 2021, it rose to 1.53 lakh deaths and 1.68 lakh deaths were recorded in 2022 due to road accidents. This shows that this graph is increasing every year. If we do not take action now, it may become more alarming in the future.

Everyone has to think seriously about this. Everyone has to fulfill his duty as a responsible citizen, so that the news of an accident today does not become a painful scene for us tomorrow. The alarm bells are ringing. It has become absolutely necessary for us to be cautious.
