Green Onions Are Rich in Nutrients
Spring onions are incredibly beneficial for health. While they are delicious, they also offer numerous health benefits. Research conducted by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) has shown that spring onions are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Their extracts possess anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-cancer properties, which can benefit the body in many ways.
Research published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology suggests that the flavonoids and sulphur-based compounds in green onions reduce inflammation in the body, inhibit the growth of cancer cells, and help manage diabetes.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), green onions contain fibre, vitamins (A, C, K, B6, and B9), calcium, iron, zinc, and potassium. These nutrients improve digestion, boost immunity, and reduce inflammation. The fibre in green onions supports digestive health. Sulphur-based compounds such as quercetin and allicin help maintain blood sugar levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and detoxify the body. Vitamin A and other nutrients help maintain healthy eyesight, while antioxidants protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals.
Green onions are considered safe and beneficial for people with diabetes. Their glycaemic index is very low, so they do not cause sudden spikes in blood sugar levels. Their sulphur compounds and fibre help control blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity. A healthy adult may consume approximately 25–30 grams of green onions daily. If added to a dish, half a cup is sufficient. For children, 10–15 grams is adequate. Green onions can be lightly fried in oil and eaten as a vegetable. They can also be used to prepare spinach and green onion parathas or added to soups and curries.
Although green onions are highly beneficial for healthy individuals, their consumption should be limited or avoided under medical advice in certain health conditions. People with irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, gas, acidity, or kidney stones are advised to avoid them.
