Work of an Architect
The job of an architect is to first create a plan for any structure and then prepare its design, followed by overseeing its construction. Today, all the large dams or buildings we see—whether their designs are unique or simple—are all created by architects.
Before constructing any building, complete preparation must be done, which is handled by the architect. The architect explains how the building will be constructed and what it will look like. The architect first learns everything about the building to be constructed, creates its plan, and only after the plan is made is the actual work on the building started. Architects are experts in making designs in various ways.
Eligibility & Courses
To become an architect, you will need to complete a course in this field. For this, passing 12th grade with Mathematics and English is mandatory, along with obtaining at least 50% marks in Mathematics and English. Meanwhile, if you have pursued a diploma after 10th grade, you can still get a degree in architecture; passing 12th grade is not required in that case.
You can pursue a 3-year diploma course in architecture after 10th grade. After 12th grade, you can complete a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), Master of Architecture (M.Arch), and even a Ph.D.
However, just acquiring this degree is not enough for an architect. They also need to learn certain software applications. With software such as AutoCAD, where architectural designs are prepared and drafted, they can create building designs. To work with such software, it is essential to know SketchUp, Revit, 3ds Max, AutoCAD, V-Ray, and Photoshop, as well as hand drawing.
Career Prospects
As an architect, you can build your career in the private, public, or government sectors. In the public sector, there is a constant demand for architects in departments like Public Works (PWD), Irrigation, and Health.
In the government sector, apart from the Archaeological Department, Ministry of Defence, and Railways, you can look for job opportunities with local agencies and state housing departments. If you gain a few years of experience, you can also start your own business as a consultant or contractor. Due to large-scale investment in the construction sector, the demand for architects is continuously rising. According to experts, there is still a significant gap between the demand and supply of architects in India.
Salary
When starting a job as an architect in the private sector, your starting salary could be ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 per month. However, salary depends on the size of the organisation and your experience level. After 2 to 4 years of experience, your monthly salary can exceed ₹50,000. In the government sector, you can earn a salary of several lakhs per year, depending on the pay scale.
