Energy: Not Chemical, but Indigenous Beverages are the Best for Refreshment
Avoid Energy Drinks, Choose Local Drinks
Introduction: In modern times, young people often use energy drinks to refresh themselves quickly. Nowadays, the trend of chemical energy drinks has increased significantly. However, you may be surprised to know that these drinks can be harmful to health. A study has claimed that continuous consumption of energy drinks increases problems such as restlessness and a rapid heartbeat, which may lead to serious mental and physical issues in the long run. On the other hand, drinking indigenous beverages like coconut water, lemonade, buttermilk or lassi, green tea, and fruit and vegetable juices provides lasting energy and has a positive effect on health.
Scientific Findings on Energy Drinks
Research conducted by Dr. Sudhir Kumar of the Christian Medical College in Tamil Nadu has revealed that energy drinks, in addition to caffeine, often contain excessive amounts of sugar and stimulants such as taurine, guarana, and ginseng. These drinks provide instant energy but gradually disrupt sleep patterns and put pressure on the heart and brain. Continuous consumption can cause problems such as restlessness and a rapid heartbeat, which may result in serious mental and physical issues over time.
The study included students from 226 colleges across the country, of whom 62 per cent consumed energy drinks. It also revealed that these drinks negatively affect the gut microbiome, which consists of healthy bacteria in the digestive system. Regular consumption reduces bacterial diversity and gene activity, which may affect nutrition and lead to irritability, anxiety, or depression.
Researchers advise students to maintain a consistent daily routine and ensure at least eight hours of sleep. Instead of energy drinks, they should choose homemade beverages or fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Activities such as meditation, yoga, exercise, or light walking can also help relieve stress.
Conclusion
Indigenous beverages are healthier, safer, and more sustainable alternatives to chemical energy drinks. Adopting natural drinks along with a balanced lifestyle ensures both physical and mental well-being.
