Jaggery: The Nectar of the Winter Season
Introduction: According to Ayurveda texts, ‘jaggery’ is not just sweet but also has many properties like anti-bile, anti-diabetic, anti-fatigue and blood detoxifier. According to the Ayurveda text ‘Rajnighantu’, jaggery is good for the heart, anti-itch and other skin diseases. It also removes many defects of urine and stool.

Cures Diseases Like TB, Jaundice & Anemia:
According to ‘Harit Samhita’ written by Hariti Rishi, jaggery is like nectar which cures many diseases like tuberculosis (TB), cough, ulcer, weakness, jaundice and anemia. Jaggery and dry fruit laddu or jaggery and flax seed laddu is given to women after delivery to infuse energy in their body.
Source of Vitamin A, and B Complex:
Jaggery not only nourishes but also makes the body capable of fighting diseases. It is also beneficial for rickets in children. Vitamin A present in abundant quantity in jaggery is beneficial for night blindness, dysentery, tuberculosis, ascites, inflammation of intestines, teeth, throat and lung diseases. B complex present in jaggery protects the body from emaciation, heart weakness, weakness of liver, kidney and digestive system and nervous diseases.
Removes Body Weakness:
Eating jaggery and sesame laddu or sesame gajak in winter keeps the body healthy and fit and prevents diseases like cold, cough, etc. After meals, eating jaggery and sesame laddu or papdi, gajak, etc. or various other things made from jaggery makes the food easily digestible, even heavy food gets digested. Eating jaggery halwa in breakfast in the morning not only improves the body but also brings a new glow on the face. Eating rabri made from jaggery and wheat flour infuses new life into the body. Almonds, dry fruits, etc. can also be added to make it more nutritious.
Cures Cough, Cold and Throat Related Problems:
If you feel nauseous or dizzy due to any reason, drinking jaggery water mixed with a little ginger juice is instant relief. If the throat is sore due to cold or any other reason, or throat disease or loss of voice, eating two grains of black pepper (Golaki) along with fifty grams of jaggery relieves all the throat problems. In case of normal cough, mix ground black pepper in jaggery and make small tablets and suck them two-three times a day to get rid of the cough. In case of dry cough or asthma, mixing mustard oil in jaggery and licking it is beneficial. For medicinal use, only old jaggery should be used.
Cures Headache:
In case of water loss due to diarrhea and high fever, drinking jaggery water mixed with lemon juice provides immediate relief. People who get headaches before sunrise get miraculous benefits if they are given a little jaggery mixed with cow ghee in the morning.
Avoid Eating Jaggery During Pregnancy & Blood Related Issues:
Jaggery should not be used during pregnancy. The use of jaggery is also prohibited in blood related disorders and bleeding. Jaggery should not be consumed in large quantities at once.
Jaggery Tea
Jaggery tea is considered best for protection from cold. Grind a quarter teaspoon of black pepper and dried ginger and add it to boiling water and after some time add a small piece of old jaggery of about twenty grams. When the jaggery melts, add four basil leaves and take it off and filter it. This jaggery tea will protect you completely from cold. If you have a cold, runny nose or headache, then this jaggery tea will prove to be miraculous to provide quick relief from that condition.
